COMSTOCK PARK HIGH SCHOOL: 1

Regular season is over and District games are here. Tigers facing Comstock Park, who is used to playing against difficult opponents, was on the field early ready to get the game over. Our supportive parents and fans trickled in as the game was about to start.

The ref signals the start of the game and the ball starts to roll. Quickly, Tigers make runs using lateral midfielders, Teslynn Ausema and Delaney Cronk,  but no luck despite their attempts with shots and good crossed balls into the box. Midfield also included Samantha Fryling/Morgan Ausema/Makayla Cronk, Alainna Dietz, and Emme Losee all whom were pressing to win the ball in the middle of the field. Defenders, Sydney Higgins, Kim Settlemyre, Gracie Bearup, and Avery Geisen, on their toes ready to defend any run coming their way. Comstock Park had a couple of drop kicks from their goalkeeper that caught our defenders off-guard as the ball flew over our defensive line giving CP forwards a chance for a run at our goal. Our fearless keeper, Lilian Scott, was ready to go one on one if necessary.  The first half was halfway through and after multiple attempts at goal from our Tigers; with 27 minutes on the clock center mid, Emme, receives the ball from Gracie and dribbles up the center of the field. Comstock Park fearing Emme would create a give and go play with laterals (Tes or Delaney) or forward Nikki Tellkamp retreats their defense to cover possible lateral plays. Retreating defense was a big mistake for CP, as Emme gets closer and closer to the 18 box, as the great playmaker she is, she can’t help to scan the area for a possible pass, but has no one on her with a clear opening to goal. As coaches scream to shoot, she takes the shot and for a second it appears the ball is too high but then it curves back down straight into the goal.

With the first half winding down, Lady Tigers kept pressuring hungry for more points.  Once again, at midfield, Emme sets a play in motion with only 3 minutes left in the first half. Quick passes are made and Emme sends the ball into the top right corner of CP box where Delaney appeared out of nowhere to receive the ball and score our second goal of the match. It’s halftime and the score is 2-0 in favor of our Tigers.

The clock has been reset to 40 minutes as second half starts. Tigers feeling a little confident start the half with less urgency and CP benefits. CP wins control on the right side of midfield and boots a ball into our box where our defense struggled to clear the ball. With the box so congested with players, a CP player snuck in and took a shot catching our keeper by surprise. Comstock Park was now on the board. A 2-1 lead for Tigers is not a comfortable lead and Our Lady Tigers knew this as they pressed on. Our offense had various shots that should have led to goals but unfortunately were missed, but it was okay as long as we continued the pressure. Avery Geisen owning her side of the defensive line wins the ball and starts a counterattack. She dribbles the ball past the center of the field and sends the ball in to center mid, Nikki. Nikki trying to stay calm used short touches to dribble as she faced two defenders. She gets close enough and taps ball in. Tigers now were leading 3-1. Again, our amazing defense making a play as left fullback, Sydney Higgins, wins the ball and uses her offense mind to dribble up the field. Syd looks up and sends the ball to left lateral mid, Tes. Tes shields the ball, dribbles in, and at the top left of CP’s 18 box she takes a shot. A beautiful or as coach Jesus calls it “a dirty” shot that left CP’s goalkeeper helplessly watching as the ball lands in the right upper corner. This was our fourth goal on the board. Tigers continuing to pressure run out of time for more goals . Lady Tigers win 4 to 1 and move on to semifinals.

Semifinals will be played at Oakridge at 5p.m. against Tri County. Come support our Ladies! “Third time is the charm!”. Here we come TC!! Go TIGERS!!
