At Whitehall High School on Saturday Febraury 10th two Tigers qualified for individual regionals.  Alex Russo became a 3 time regional qualifier finishing in 3rd place at 126lbs.  In his opening match Russo earned his 100th career win as just a Junior.  Alex lost by two points in the semifinals, then bounced back by tech falling 17-1 his oakridge opponent before pinning his Gustinis from Kent City  in the consolation finals.  Senior Hunter Crosby joins him at 215lbs.  After falling to the number one seed, Hunter pinned Durfee from Comstock park, then Benard from Orchard View in the consolation finals.  Senior Max Heitzman, Sophomore Kashton Atwood, and Freshmen Malachi Dawe each lost in the consolation semi finals (blood round) coming up 1 match short of qualifying.  Russo and Crosby wrestle at Tri County on Saturday the 17th in their quest to qualify for the state meet.

On Saturday February 3rd, Kent City hosted the CSAA individual tournament.  Grant had 4 wrestlers earn all conference honors.  Junior Alex Russo at 126lbs, earned his 3rd consecutive First Team all conference honors.  Russo had 2 pins on the day before falling in the championship match 5-7.  Sophomore Kashton Atwood at 132lbs earned honorable mention, pinning his tri county opponent in the consolation finals.  Senior Max Heitzman at 165lbs also pinned his Newaygo opponent in the consolation finals to become honorable mention all conference.  Senior Hunter Crosby at 215lbs, also pinned his Tri County opponent in the consolation finals, earning honorable mention in the process.  The Grant Tigers finished in 6th place in the CSAA.  The wrestlers go to Tri County Wednesday February 7th for team districts, they open against Rival Newaygo.

Grant went to Central Montcalm to make up a postponed tri from January 10th.  The Tigers opened by defeating the host Hornets 40-37.  Trailing 17-33, Kashton Atwood earned a technical fall, followed by Alex Russo pinning his opponent.  With the score at 28-37, Levi Thompson pinned at 144lbs and Rico Robinson took a forfeit to finish the comeback at 40-37.  Grant dropped the next dual to state ranked Lakeview 24-48.  Going 2-0 on the night were Malachi Dawe, Kashton Atwood, Alex Russo (2 pins), Levi Thompson (2 pins), and Rico Robinson. Logan Thompson and Max Heitzman also picked up wins.  The Tigers go to Kent City Saturday February 3rd for the CSAA conference individual tournament.

The Grant Wrestling team finished 9th at the annual Shelby Super Duals on Saturday January 27th.  The Tigers opened with a tough match against Sparta falling 30-39.  The Tigers then lost to  2nd seeded Reeths Puffer 18-59, before coming back and defeating Mason County Central 48-21.  After the brackets were reset, the Tigers fell to Fremont in a back and forth match 33-38, then finishing the day with a loss against state ranked Pine River.  The wrestling teams sits at 12-15, going into the final week of the regular season.  Going 5-0 were Alex Russo (3 pins) and Max Heitzman (4 pins), while Kashton Atwood went 4-1 with 2 pins.  Picking up 2 wins on the day were Cameron Espinoza, Eddie Beight, Levi Thompson, Logan Thompson, and Hunter Crosby.  The Tigers go to Central Montcalm for a make up CSAA tri on Wednesday, then going to Kent City Saturday for the individual conference championship on Saturday.

On Monday January 22nd the Grant Tigers took on Oakridge and Lee.  The Wrestlers started off by defeating Oakridge 48-22 before defeating host Lee 60-15.  Getting 2 wins on the night were Malachi Dawe, Shawn Warmuskerken, Cameron Espinoza, Kashton Atwood (2 pins), Max Heitzman, Kaleb Paige, and Hunter Crosby (2 pins).  Also picking up victories were Lincoln Richards, Rico Robinson, Markie Davis, and Logan Thompson.  The Tigers host Chippewa Hills and Kent City on Wednesday night the 24th for Senior Night.

On Monday January 8th Grant hosted Fremont for a single dual towards the Newaygo County Championship.  The match went back and forth with each team holding multiple leads, the Tigers got pins from Cameron Espinoza (120 lbs), Kashton Atwood (126lbs), Alex Russo (132lbs) and Max Heitzman (165lbs).  Evan Clouser (285lbs) and Eddie Beight (138lbs) also came away with victories.  After a pin for Fremont at 175lbs and a double forfeit at 190lbs, the match was tied at 33-33, with senior Hunter Crosby coming up.  Hunter pinned his Packer opponent in the 2nd period to win it for Grant.  The Tigers wrestle at Lakeview this coming weekend in an individual tournament.

At the annual Fruitport Legends tournament on Saturday January 6th, the Tigers wrestling team took 9th place out of 16 teams.  Junior Alex Russo took the championship poster at 126lbs.  Giving up only 4 points against him on the day, Alex defeated his Fruitport opponent 10-2 in the finals.  Freshmen Levi Thompson took home the Bronze at 144lbs going 4-1 on the day, going to overtime in his placement match and securing 3rd place with a takedown.   Senior Hunter Crosby and Sophomore Cameron Espinoza each picked up 2 victories on the day, falling one match short each of placing in this tough tournament.  Grant host Fremont Monday the 8th at 5:00 at the middle school for a Newaygo county challenge dual.

On Wednesday December 20th the Grant Tigers started out their conference schedule with a 2-0 mark. Opening with a 52-29 victory over neighboring rival Newaygo and then defeating Big Rapids 40-39.  The Big Rapids dual came down to Levi Thompson needing to pin, which he did in the third period.  With the score deadlocked at 39-39, the Tigers won  on the 5th tie breaking criteria,  the team with less voids,  to secure the win.  Going 2-0 on the night were Haydon Kass, Cameron Espinoza, Kashton Atwood, Alex Russo, and Levi Thompson.  Also picking up wins were Max Heitzman, Kaleb Paige, Rico Robinson, Malachi Dawe, Shawn Warmuskerken, and Eddie Beight.  That puts the wrestling team at 7-3 on the season.

Grant Wrestling took 6th place out of 18 teams at the annual Mark Bosse memorial tournament at Hart.  Pacing the Tigers was Alex Russo who took home the Gold and the poster at 126lbs.  Senior Max Heitzman and fresmen Levi Thompson both took 3rd place at 165 and 144lbs respectively.  Sophomore Logan Thompson went 3-2 on the day to finish 6th at 157lbs.  Also picking up wins for the Tigers were Cameron Espinoza, Kashton Atwood, and Rico Robinson.

On Friday December 8th the Tigers wrestled under the spotlight against Hesperia in a tightly contested match.  Going back and forth the entire dual, Grant split the matches 7-7, losing by a final score of 38-42.  Malachi Dawe, Cameron Espinoza, Alex Russo, Kashton Atwood, Logan Thompson, Max Heitzman, and Hunter Crosby all won matches for the Tigers.

Grant finished 3rd at the annual Dave Flemming memorial team tournament at Kelloggsville on Saturday December 9th with a 3-2 record on the day.  The wrestling team opened against eventual champion Hudsonville falling 30-45, then going on a winning streak defeating Union 54-30, Forest Hills Northern 57-21, and Kelloggsville 42-36, before falling to Coopersville 18-56.  Senior Max Heitzman led the way with a 5-0 record (3 pins).  Alex Russo (4 pins), Kashton Atwood (4 pins), and Hunter Crosby (4 pins) all recorded 4 wins.  Levi Thompson (2 pins), Rico Robinson (2 pins), Logan Thompson (2 pins) each had 3 victories, while Malachi Dawe, Shawn Warmuskerken, and Haydon Kass each notched 2 wins.  The Tigers sit at 5-3 on the season and travel to Hart on Saturday December 16th for an individual tourney.

The Wrestling team started the season strong with wins over Ottawa Hills 66-18 and host Godwin Heights 54-22.  A total of 9 different Tigers picked up 2 varsity wins on the night, Malachi Dawe, Shawn Warmuskerken, Cameron Espinoza, Alex Russo (1 pin), Kashton Atwood (1 pin), Levi Thompson (1 pin), Rico Robinson, Logan Thompson (1 pin), and Max Heitzman (1 pin).  Eddie Beight, Haydon Kass, and Wyatt Miliusis all grabbed a victory.  Grant travels to Hesperia on Friday December 8th for a spotlight dual, then going to Kelloggsville on Saturday for a team tournament.

The girls took on Whitehall tonight.  Nadia shut out the Whitehall #1 singles player 6-0 in the second set.  Madison, at #2 singles, won the first set 6-1 and closed out the match in the third set 10-6.  Jocee and Ana only gave up 3 games in winning the top doubles spot.  Emerson and Lauryn took the hard fought first set 7-5 and then followed it up with a 6-1 win at #4 doubles.  Sophia and Emma played a great at #3 dubs going 4-6 5-7 in an almost 2 hour battle.  The girls head to Big Rapids Thursday for their third match in 3 days.

The girls team got wins at the top spots in the lineup tonight vs Sparta.  Nadia at 1S and Jocee & Ana at 1D both won 6-1 6-2.  The Tigers got close at 2S, as Madison went 5-7 in the first set.  Ava and Stephanie at 2 Doubles had only one break of serve in the first set.  At #4 doubles, Emerson and Lauryn went 4-6 in the second set.  But the team couldn't get any more match wins to fall to the visiting Spartans 6-2.

The Tigers played at the tough Mustang Invite at NPC.  The defending champs from Ann Arbor were there, as were 3 of the other top 5 state finishers from last year's state finals, plus Grand Haven and Zeeland East.  The ladies battled hard, winning many points and games against top notch competition.

The Tigers got wins from #1 singles, Nadia Zerlaut; Madison Brooks at #2 singles; and Kierstyn Scarbrough in the #3 position.  The team's top doubles team, Jocee Pleune and Ana Ovalle, didn't lose a game in the second set to secure the tie.  Sophia and Emma fougth back in the 2nd set to force a third set, but couldn't pull out the victory.

Grant will be sending one wrestler to Regionals Saturday the 18th at Belding.  Alex Russo was runner-up at 120lbs.  Alex defeated his opponent from the host Whitehall Vikings in the semi-finals 7-0 before falling to Gorton from Kent City 2-8 in the championship.  Max Heitzman lost in the "blood round' consolation round coming up one point short.  Cameron Espinoza also lost in the blood round by pin the second period.

Grant hosted the CSAA individual conference championship on Saturday February 4th.  The Tigers had 3 individuals earn all conference accolades.  Alex Russo won the conference championship at 120lbs.  Alex defeated Perez from Lakeview in a rematch he had previously lost.  Russo took an early 2-0 lead in the match and never looked back on his way to a 4-1 decision.  Adrian Bouwkamp 132lbs and Max Heitzman 157lbs both earned Honorable Mention.  Adrian took an early lead in his consoloation finals bout, before getting caught and pinned in the second period.  Max had a similar match after taking a lead into the second period and then was pinned after a scramble.  Grant travels to Newaygo this upcoming Wednesday for team districts, then go to Whitehall the following Saturday for individual districts.

The Tigers traveled to Shelby for the annual Super Duals on Saturday January 28th.  Shorthanded from injury, Grant came up short against Lakeview, Cedar Springs, and host Shelby.  The wrestlers finished strong by beating rival 36-24 to end the day.  Going 4-1 on the day were Alex Russo and Max Heitzman (3 pins).  Adrian Bouwkamp went 3-2 (2 pins), while Cam Espinoza chipped in 2 wins.  Grant host the CSAA individual conference tournament on Saturday February 4th.
