NEWAYGO HIGH SCHOOL: 0

A week after beating Newaygo, we faced them again in a tough battle. Immediately, Captain/keep Lilian Scott, who was leading warm up exercises encouraged our team “to stare them in the eyes” to let them know we were there for a win. Tigers started out the game with possession, but Newaygo’s new strategy was to “park the bus” and took a defensive lineup. They were also playing extremely physical, but it wasn’t anything our tough Tigers couldn’t handle with tactic and poise. Grant starting with a slow tempo utilized their passing to push forward around the opponent’s loaded defensive line up and had several attempts at goal. Nikki Tellkamp, forward had 4 clear shots at goal that unfortunately landed in their keeps hands. With our defense (Sydney Higgins/Haleigh Moyer, Gracie Bearup, Carli Fryling, and Avery Geisen) pushing up it was only a matter of time before we would score. In a quick, one-two pass play Makayla Cronk, freshmen left midfielder, crashed in as Delaney Cronk, Right lateral mid, sent the ball into Newaygo’s box and scored our first goal. This was Makayla’s first goal of the season and her first as a high school student. Shortly after Makayla scored, her cousin, Delaney Cronk gained possession on right side of the field where she dominates; she dribbled past not just one Newaygo player but 3 and took a shot that landed the ball in Newaygo’s net. First half ended with 2-0 in favor of our Lady Tigers. Second half started, and you could see Our Ladies wanted more. Tigers began to move to ball and passing tempo picked up speed. Kim Settlemyre and Alainna Dietz/Morgann Ausema, midfielders, were responsible for recovering and settling ball to allow us to create plays; in which Emme Losee was trying to set the tempo. Kim Settlemyre, not letting Newaygo players even breathe if they had the ball was responsible for multiple controlled steals in our favor. Teslynn Ausema (left lateral mid) and Delaney Cronk (right lateral mid) both fought hard and were able to cross/send the ball into Newaygo’s box numerous times. Some plays ending in corner kicks that favored us. During one of those corner kicks, Newaygo desperate to get the ball out of danger kicked the ball out near 18 box where Kim Settlemyre settled the ball and took the shot, scoring our third goal. With little time still on the clock, Grant continued to push forward. Unfortunately, we ran out of time but our Lady Tigers walked out Victorious.
