The Grant Tigers traveled to Big Rapids to take on the Cardinals of Big Rapids. The Tigers suffered a tough loss in a hard fought contest by a score of 23-14.

 

After being off for two weeks due to Covid-19 quarantine the Tigers had just one practice to prepare for Big Rapids. Big Rapids on the other hand was playing their 4th game of the year.

 

Big Rapids jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the 1st quarter. Your Tigers answered as QB Brendan Keelean threw a 12-yard TD pass to Orion Evans early in the 2nd quarter. Gonzalo Magana kicked the extra point making the score BR 8, Grant 7. Big Rapids scored on an interception return for a TD late in the 2nd quarter but missed the extra point. The Tigers answered quickly with Keelean finding Trevor Lowry open in the middle of the field for a 29-yard TD strike! Magana’s point after tied the score, 14-14. Big Rapids added a field goal just before the 2nd. quarter ended to take a 17-14 lead into halftime.

 

The Cardinals scored the only points in the 2nd half in the third quarter on a long TD pass on 3rd and long. The extra point attempt failed, making the final score 23-14, Cardinals. The Tigers record moves to 1-1, while the Cardinal improve to 2-2.

 

Brendan Keelean was the leading rusher for the Tigers with 44 yards on 13 carries. He was 7 for 17 passing for 115 yards, 2TD’s and 2 INT’s. Orion Evans added 40 yards rushing on 8 carries. Evans also had 3 receptions for 33 yards. Brett Long caught 1 pass for 45 yards.

 

The defense was led by Senior Trevor Lowry with 7 tackles, a pass breakup and a tackle for loss. Senior Caleb Thompson also recorded 7 tackles. Brady Jacobs, Isiah Powell, Dylan Wemple, Treyton Railling and Reid Williams each had 5 tackles. Orion Evans added 2 interceptions and 2 PBU’s.

 

“I was happy to see our boys back on the field’! “They came out here and fought hard”. “It’s a difficult task to prepare for a game with only one practice. I am proud of our players and coaching staff, to come out here and compete the way they did says a lot about their tenacity”. “We will head back to the drawing board and be ready for a tough Central Montcalm team next week at home”.
