Boys Varsity Tennis vs. Multiple Opponents

The guys tennis team finished off the season at the Regional in Traverse City yesterday.  The Tigers got wins at #3 and #4 doubles, by Grant Frye and Hayden Schwartz; and Daniel and Garrett Frye.  The team had to face off against many seeded players, including #1 State Ranked St Francis and #5 ranked Big Rapids.  Sawyer Carr played a great first set against the #2 seed losing 6-3.  Seth and Austin went 6-3 in their second set vs the 4 seed at #1 doubles.  Senior #1 singles player Isaac Higgins had to face the #2 seed as well.  Congrats to the seniors on their year and careers.  There are 9 returners that look to power the tennis team to the next level next year.

The Tigers played in a top notch tournament Saturday facing the likes of Hudsonville, Byron Center, Unity Christian, Lowell, Jackson Parma Western and Unity Christian.  The guys gained valuable experience playing tough competition.  Seth and Austin at #1 doubles battled toe to toe with Byron Center in their last match.  Freshman Zene Maynard was super close to South Christian's player.  Grant and Hayden played well at #3 doubles.

Lose: 1 - 7
The young Tigers lost a close, highly contested match vs West Michigan Christian tonight.  The guys got their lone win at #1 singles from senior Isaac Higgins.  The rest of the singles battled hard winning multiple games and playing some great points.  The doubles flights fought back in the second sets in three of the matches.  After losing the first sets, 1Dubs, 3 Dubs and 4 Doubles all won the second sets forcing the full third sets.  Freshman Hayden Schwartz and Grant Frye won their second set 6-0!!  However, the comebacks were halted today without the teams getting any of the wins.  But the Tigers are hungry for a rematch in a couple weeks at the conference tournament!!

Lose: 8 - 15
The young Tigers competed in the Pre Regional Tournament yesterday.  The guys finished with 8 points in 3rd place, behind powerhouse host St Francis and Ludington.  Riley Schwartz and Drew Crater picked up wins in the singles.  Each of the doubles teams won a match.  Isaac and Sawyer won 7-5 7-5 at #1 doubles.  Garett and Austin only gave up 3 games in their 6-1 6-2 win over Glen Lake at #2 dubs.  At #3 doubles, freshman Grant and Hayden knocked out Harbor Springs 6-4 6-2.  Daniel Stong and Brock Schoolman won a three set battle in thier first match of the day, beating Elk Rapids 3-6 6-2 10-3.  Great job to all the players gaining valuable experience.

The Tigers got the fall tennis season for the boys started at the Portland Invite.  The team started 4 freshman and gained valuable match experience in a pressure situations.  The guys won three "3 set" matches and dropped 2 that went the distance after both teams split sets.  Somphomore Drew Crater went undefeated at #4 singles and took home the 1st place medal with a 6-3 6-0 win over Pontiac Notre Dame Prep.  Freshman Grant Freye and Haydon Schwartz won the silver medals at #3 Doubles, beating both Portland and Cheasaning.  Junior Daniel Stong and freshman Zene Maynard were down a set in their third match of the day, but fought back to win the second set 6-3.  In the match tiebreaker, they again found themselves down, 4-9.  Facing multiple match points, they guys reeled off 7 straight points to claim victory.
