Boys Varsity Wrestling vs. Tri-County High School

Two Grant Wrestlers qualified for the State Finals this past weekend.  Senior Brady Jacobs opened with a win over his Belding opponent 5-4, before dominating in the semifinals over #9 in the state Alward from Durand by a score of 10-0.  Brady fell in the championship to the #7 ranked Corunna wrestler to finish in 2nd place at 152lbs.  Senior Angel Tello fell to the #5 ranked wrestler from Portland before losing by decision in the consolations.  Senior Nolan Corvers lost to the #4 ranked grappler from Alma in the opening round, Nolan lost in the consolation round 6-8 on a last second reversal from the 215 pounder from Chesaning.  Freshmen Alex Russo opened with a 15-1 major decision over his Portland opponent before losing in the semifinals to the #7 grappler form Alma.  Alex responded by defeating Kik from Kent City for the 3rd week in a row in the Blood Round  by a score of 3-2.  Russo had to injury default in the consolation finals to finish in 4th place and qualify at 112lbs.  Alex is just the 3rd freshmen in Grant's history to qualify for the State Finals.   Grant has had Wrestling State Qualifiers for 13 consecutive seasons.  Jacobs and Russo will travel to Ford Field March 4th and 5th.

The Grant Wrestling team will be sending 4 grapplers to regionals this coming week.  Senior Angel Tello defeated Orchard View and Tri County wrestlers before losing to Hawkins from Comstock Park in the consolation finals to finish 4th at 145lbs.  Senior Nolan Corvers lost a bout in the semifinals to the eventual district champion that came down to the final minute, coming back to major decision Anderson from Kent City, taking home the 3rd place medal. Freshmen Alex Russo defeated Kik from Kent City for the 2nd week in a row in the championship, scoring a takedown in sudden death overtime on a crowd roaring scramble at 112lbs.  Senior Brady Jacobs dominated at 152lbs, allowing only 3 points all day, including shutting out David Hill from Muskegon Catholic Central on his way to claiming the district championship.  The four Tigers will travel to Tri County this Saturday for regionals, the top four at each weight punch their ticket to the State Finals.

Four Grant wrestlers earned all conference honors at the CSAA individual tournament. Brady Jacobs rebounded from an upset loss in the semifinals to finish in 3rd place at 152lbs, pinning his Reed City opponent quickly in the finals to finish as honorable mention.  Angel Tello won 2 close matches to make the championship match at 145lbs before falling to Trey Meyers, a Fremont grappler, earning 1st team all conference.  Nolan Corvers also earned 1st team all conference losing in the finals match to his Reed City Wyatt Spalo opponent at 215lbs.  Winning the 112lbs championship by a score of 3-0 over Zane Kik from Kent City.  The Tigers host team districts at the middle school Wednesday night, opening against Tri County.

The Grant wrestling team hosted #2 state ranked Whitehall for two duals on Senior night.  Fremont could not compete due to illness in the program.  Whitehall flexed their muscle in the opening dual winning 68-3. The Tigers came back to defeat their B team 33-27 after honoring Grant's 5 seniors Hayden Gonzalez, Chase Mester, Brady Jacobs, Angel Tello, and Nolan Corvers.  Getting a win a piece on the night were Alex Russo, Brady Jacobs, Nolan Corvers, Angel Tello, Max Heitzman, Mark Jones, and Scott Stults.  The Grant wrestlers travel to Shelby for the Annual Super Duals this Saturday.

The Tigers hosted a CSAA Gold conference quad on Wednesday, going 1-1.  Grant opened against Reed City falling in a close match until the end 34-48.  The grapplers came back to beat Central Montcalm 46-30.  Alex Russo, Chase Mester, Max Heitzman, Brady Jacobs (2 pins), and Nolan Corvers led the way by each going 2-0 on the night.  Mark Jones, Angel Tello, Scott Stults, and Hayden Gonzalez each had a victory.  The wrestling team resumes it's schedule next Wednesday at home hosting Fremont and Whitehall.

After Alma cancelled their annual team tourney, the Grant wrestling team shifted gears and competed at Lakeview last Friday night and Saturday morning.  On Friday at the JV competition, Mark Jones took 2nd place at 103lbs, Wayland Hills grabbed 3rd place at 125lbs, Hayden Gonzalez notch a 3rd place finish at 189lbs, and Max Heitzman finished in 1st place at 152lbs by going 3-0 on the night.  Saturday at the varsity meet Chase Mester finished in 6th place at 130lbs,  Angel Tello finished on the podium in 4th place at 160lbs, Brady Jacobs took home the Silver at 152lbs, and Nolan Corvers also was a runner-up 2nd place at 215lbs. The Tigers host a CSAA Gold quad at the middle school Wednesday night at 5:30.  Come and support your Tigers against Central Montcalm and Reed City.

The Grant Wrestling team placed 4th out of 9 teams at the annual Fruitport Legends Tournament.  Freshmen Alex Russo tech falled his Grand Rapids Christian opponent in the semis, before beating the Greenville wrestler 8-2 in the championship to take home the 112lbs chart and gold medal.  Senior Brady Jacobs majored his Grandville opponent in the semis 15-7 before falling in the championship to the champ from Greenville by a score of 0-8 at 152lbs to grab silver.  Senior Nolan Corvers pinned his Fruitport opponent in the semis, then got pinned by the eventual champ from Greenville in the championship at 215lbs to claim 2nd place.  At 130lbs senior Chase Mester lost a close match in the semis 8-10 to the grappler from Grandville.  Chase responded by pinning his Fruitport opponent in the 2nd period to claim 3rd place.  The Tigers wrestle at Fremont on Wednesday the 12th against Chippewa Hills and rivals Newaygo Lions.

Four Tigers medal at the Mark Bosse Invite at Hart.  Grant finished 9th out of 19 teams at the individual tourney.  Nolan Corvers (215lbs) pinned his first 3 opponents from Fruitport, Hart, and Tri-County, before falling in the championship match to Simon from Lakewood to finish in 2nd place.  Alex Russo (112lbs) pinned his opponents from Three Rivers and Mio, while Tech Falling  his Kalkaska opponent, before falling 2-6 in the finals to Clark from Lakewood to also finish 2nd.  Brady Jacobs (152lbs) pinned his Muskegon Catholic Central opponent before being upset in the Semis by Stalhood from Tri-County.  Brady came back with a vengeance to major decision Saddler from Three Rivers to claim 3rd place.  Chase Mester (130lbs) pinned his Lakewood opponent to start the day before losing to the 2nd and 3rd seeds to finish in 4th place.  The Tigers return to action in Wayland on December 29th.

The Grant wrestling team traveled to the annual Dave Fleming Memorial Team Tournament at Kelloggsville, finishing 3-2 as a team.  The Tigers opened with Hudsonville losing a close back and forth match 33-39, then responded by winning the next 3 duals against Union 54-18, Caledonia B 47-12, and the host Rockets 46-36.  Grant ended the day losing to the tourney champs Coopersville 23-59.  Going 5-0 on the day were Alex Russo 112lbs (2 pins) and Brady Jacobs 152/160lbs (3 pins).  Winning 4 matches were Chase Mester 130lbs (2 pins), Max Heitzman 145lbs, Angel Tello 152/160lbs (2 pins), and Nolan Corvers 215lbs (4 pins). Picking up 3 wins were Mark Jones 103lbs and Wayland Hills 119lbs.  Scott Stults 171lbs added 2 wins.   The Tigers travel to Big Rapids this coming Wednesday for their first CSAA Gold conference quad.

The Grant wrestling team opened their season at Cedar Springs with a win against Manistee 42-27.  Alex Russo and Noland Corvers each won by pin against the Chippewas.  The Tigers then fell to the host Red Hawks 15-60.  Going 2-0 on the night were Alex Russo, Angel Tello, Brady Jacobs who picked up a pin against Cedar Springs, and Nolan Corvers.  Also picking up wins on the night were Wayland Hills, Chase Mester, and Max Heitzman.  The grapplers from Grant travel to Kelloggsville this Saturday the 11th for a team tourney.
