Boys Varsity Wrestling vs. Multiple Opponents

Grant will be sending one wrestler to Regionals Saturday the 18th at Belding.  Alex Russo was runner-up at 120lbs.  Alex defeated his opponent from the host Whitehall Vikings in the semi-finals 7-0 before falling to Gorton from Kent City 2-8 in the championship.  Max Heitzman lost in the "blood round' consolation round coming up one point short.  Cameron Espinoza also lost in the blood round by pin the second period.

Grant hosted the CSAA individual conference championship on Saturday February 4th.  The Tigers had 3 individuals earn all conference accolades.  Alex Russo won the conference championship at 120lbs.  Alex defeated Perez from Lakeview in a rematch he had previously lost.  Russo took an early 2-0 lead in the match and never looked back on his way to a 4-1 decision.  Adrian Bouwkamp 132lbs and Max Heitzman 157lbs both earned Honorable Mention.  Adrian took an early lead in his consoloation finals bout, before getting caught and pinned in the second period.  Max had a similar match after taking a lead into the second period and then was pinned after a scramble.  Grant travels to Newaygo this upcoming Wednesday for team districts, then go to Whitehall the following Saturday for individual districts.

The Tigers traveled to Shelby for the annual Super Duals on Saturday January 28th.  Shorthanded from injury, Grant came up short against Lakeview, Cedar Springs, and host Shelby.  The wrestlers finished strong by beating rival 36-24 to end the day.  Going 4-1 on the day were Alex Russo and Max Heitzman (3 pins).  Adrian Bouwkamp went 3-2 (2 pins), while Cam Espinoza chipped in 2 wins.  Grant host the CSAA individual conference tournament on Saturday February 4th.

On Saturday January 14th a small squad of Grant Wrestlers trekked to Lakeview for their annual individual tourney.  Alex Russo 120lbs fell in the championship match to Perez from Lakeview to claim Silver.  Freshmen Logan Thompson 150lbs claimed 4th place in his first competition of the season after returning from injury.  Junior Kage Atwood 144lbs lost his first round match but won back to back matches to fight back thru to the 5th place match were he fell to Hill from Lakeview for the second time.  The Tigers host a CSAA conference tri with Reed City and Tri County Wednesady January 18th at 5:00

Two Tigers stood at the podium at the annual Fruitport Legends Tournament on Saturday January 7th. Alex Russo finished in 2nd place at 120lbs falling to a returning state champion from Hudsonville in the finals 2-10.  Russo avenged an earlier loss from a state qualifier from Fruitport controlling the match and winning 7-3 in the semi-finals.  Junior Hunter Crosby finished in 4th place at 215lbs after falling to his Byron Center opponent in the placement match.  Cameron Espinoza and Adrian Bouwkamp each came up one match short of placing, but each earning 2 wins on the day.  The 16 team tournament featured top ranked teams from Divisions 1, 2, and 3.  Grant finished in 11 place overall.

The Tigers woke up early to travel down snowy roads Saturday to the annual Mark Bosse Memorial tournament at Hart.  Grant finished 9th out of 14 schools.  Senior Max Heitzman took home the bronze at 165lbs to lead the way.  Sophomore Alex Russo finished in 4th place at 120lbs, in a bracket loaded with state medalists.  Senior Adrian Bouwkamp and Freshmen Gidian Gilliette both went 3-2 on the day to finish in 6th place.  The wrestling team is off until the 28th for the Wayland team tournament.

The Tigers Wrestling team picked up their first dual meet victory of the season over Ludington on Wednesday night.  Competing at Ravenna high school, Grant defeated Ludington 60-0 in the opening dual.  The Tigers fell short against an expierenced Hesperia squad 27-48 in the second round.  Max Heitzman and Hunter Crosby led the way with two pins for wins.  Kage Atwood (1 pin), Alex Russo, and Adrian Bouwkamp each had two victories also.  German Torres picked up his first pin of the year, while Cameron Espinoza, Gidian Gillette, Logan Thompson, and Scott Stults also picked up wins.  On Saturday they travel to Hart for an individual tournament.

The Grant Wrestling team opened it's competition schedule at the annual Kelloggsville Rocket tournament.  The shorthanded Tigers came up short on the scoreboard as a team, but the young grapplers showed marked improvement as the day went on.  Individually the Tigers went 16-12 on the day.  Sophomore Alex Russo went a perfect 4-0 with two pins.  Senior Adrian Bouwkamp and Junior Max Heitzman both went 3-1 with all their wins coming by way of fall.  Junior Hunter Crosby also went 3-1 with 2 pins, his only loss coming up a weight class by a single point.  Freshmen Esteban Ramos-lundy, Cameron Espinoza, and Gidian Gillette each notched their first varsity win in their very first competition.  All 3 also notched victories at the JV level.  Grant will head to Ravenna this Wednesday for a Quad.
